It's Summer Time!

Hi everyone! Happy end of school/beginning of summer!

I'll be keeping up with the website a lot more over the summer, so keep checking back to see what's up! I have big ideas, but I'll share more as they get ready to launch ;)

Summer is my favorite time, and it's the best time for you all to get better at just playing the flute without having to worry about band or auditions or solos or anything else. So YES, you still have to practice! Aim for at least 3 days a week, 4 would be better, 6 or 7 would be the best! I'll be uploading specific exercises soon, but by the end of the summer I expect everyone to:

  • Be working towards less tense embouchures and breathing

  • Know ALL 12 scales and arpeggios at a comfortable speed for you (unless you're an incoming 6th grader) - this is all about accuracy for now

  • Be working towards consistently beautiful tone by focusing on proper use of the breath using the tone exercises I have for you

  • Become comfortable with double tonguing and other articulation patterns, each at your own pace :)

*** Some of you may get even more (minor scales, thirds, etc) depending on how the above things are going ***

This will set everyone up well for the start of the next school year!

And here's your video for the week. It's the finale from an operetta (like a mix between an opera and a play, and usually comedic!) called Candide by Leonard Bernstein. I love the melody, so beautiful and humm-able ;). You have to listen until the very end where the full choir comes in, it's just incredible. Turn the sound up if you can! Happy listening!
